The Real Hitch

In the film Hitch, Will Smith plays Alex 'Hitch' Hitchens, a specialist dating guru for men who makes shitloads of money coaching successful but socially inept men find love.

Evan Katz is like Alex 'Hitch' Hitchens in real life. He is a dating coach who is "a personal trainer for people who want to fall in love" reports Agence France-Presse.

According to another dating coach, Jennifer Viemont, the people who employ the services of a dating coach are generally more educated and relatively high up on the socio-economic ladder as the fees for the dating coach relatively high.

Viemont who charges US$200 (approximately RM700) for 2 phone calls and unlimited email support for one month says that although her clients are successful in their careers, they are clueless when it comes to finding a soulmate.

Katz, whose fees are much higher Viemont, says that people who employ dating coaches have focused so much on their careers that they have ignored their emotional side of life.

A dating coach will generally start out with some questions and advice either by phone or email.

While Katz encourages his clients to meet people online, Viemont recommends that her clients meet potential mates in off-line activities, such as wine-tastings or dance classes.

Dating coaches apparently have their own, professional association, datingcoach.org, founded a few years ago.

I don't know if there are any professional dating coaches in Malaysia, but there are hundreds of dating agencies which organise dates between their clients from their database.

There are also marriage agencies who arrange marriage partners for men with women from Vietnam. But I've not heard of any specilising in finding husbands for women.

I do not think there is a demand for dating coaches in Malaysia as singles in the higher salary scale would rather "purchase" their mates rather than spend money on being coached to find love. No matter how socially inept they are they can always buy friends and also romantic relationship.

Despite the hype about finding soulmates and true love. I think the key is having money. I know lots of women who won't admit this but their first priority is money. Most will say they like good looking, funny, caring, pet loving etc etc kind of men...but they always end up with bastards with money. This is instinctive, and since time immemorial women have gone for security first. And in today's world, money is security.

According to a recent study by Indiana University cognitive scientist Peter Todd, men go for beauty and women choose wealth and security - read this. Yes, they actually had to do a study to confirm this !

Another news report says that women prefer rich men because they are better in bed. "Rich men are powerful and successful and confident and charismatic. They know what they want, and they go out and get it. That translates to being fantastic in bed.” said a 27 year old female lawyer. The newspaper reported that science is showing that a rich man’s money has aphrodisiac qualities as well as purchasing power. read this.

However, despite the usual story of women looking to "marry up", today, there is a growing trend (at least in the US) that Men now are increasingly likely to marry wives with more education and income than they have, and the reverse is true for women - read this. Men are getting smarter. They now know that they can get hitch to a financially productive woman and have an easy life.

Really, when you cut all the bullshit...everything comes down to money. With money, a fei-chai becomes a leng-chai and a fei-por can become a leng-lui.

Inception And Lucid Dreaming

Inception is a science fiction-action film starring, amongst others, Leonardo DiCaprio and Ken Watanabe. The film is inspired by what Dutch psychiatrist and writer, Frederik van Eeden, call lucid dreaming.

A lucid dream is a dream in which the sleeper is aware that he or she is dreaming. A lucid dreamer can actively participate in and manipulate imaginary experiences in the dream environment. Lucid dreams can seem extremely real and vivid, depending on a person's level of self-awareness during the lucid dream.

In this film, a group of experts entered the victim's human mind through dream invasion and changed that person's thoughts by undergoing an "unnecessarily complicated adventure" within the different levels of dreams.

In my opinion, while the special effects of the film are excellent, the logic and concept of the film is flawed by stretching the concept of lucid dreaming too far.

Science shows that dreaming, no matter how many levels one goes into, is still a dream; and one cannot, in any circumstances, get wounded or killed in a dream. In this film, however, people are being wounded and killed in the dream in attempts to plant a new idea into the victim's mind.

I must, however, congratulate director Christopher Nolan for another entertaining film albeit the flawed story line and concept.

20 Famous Haunted Hotels In The US

Even people who don’t believe in ghosts like a good ghost story. They’re creepy but fun, and the places ghosts are rumored to haunt wind up becoming tourist attractions. The rule applies to hotels, too, and there are plenty of them across the country with their own eerie tales of lost loves, bad killings, and spirits doomed to haunt the living.

1. Hotel Provincial (New Orleans, Louisiana)
Located in the city’s French Quarter, the Hotel Provincial dates back to before the Civil War. One of its buildings originally housed a medical hospital, and to this day people claim to see Confederate soldiers and doctors walking around or asking for help. One story talks of a ghost of a soldier from the 1930s who loved country music, and who will tune the room’s radio to the country station if it’s changed.

2. Stanley Hotel (Estes Park, Colorado)
Opened in 1909, this classic American hotel is best known for inspiring Stephen King’s The Shining after he and his wife stayed there. There have been numerous reports of hauntings, including staff claiming to hear a party in the ballroom only to find it empty. Some also claim to have seen a man standing over their bed, and believe this ghost to be responsible for stealing some guests’ personal effects.

3. Hotel del Coronado (San Diego, California)
One of the city’s most popular hotels, the Hotel del Coronado is the site of many strange happenings, some related to the death of Kate Morgan at the turn of the century. Morgan checked in under an alias in November 1892, looking sick but claiming her brother, a doctor, was arriving later. No doctor ever came, and a few days later, she went into town and bought a gun. She was found dead outside the hotel the next morning.

4. Menger Hotel (San Antonio, Texas)
San Antonio’s Menger Hotel is one of the oldest in the state with tons of history, so it’s no surprise that it’s become a hot spot for reports of otherworldy sightings. Some claim to have seen President Teddy Roosevelt drinking at the bar; Roosevelt used the hotel as a recruiting place for Rough Riders. But it’s the ghost of Sallie White that’s proven to be the most popular. White was a maid there in the late 1800s, and she was attacked in the building by her husband and wound up dying days later. People say she can still be seen walking the halls, carrying linens for guests.

5. Sheraton Gunter Hotel (San Antonio, Texas)
Another south Texas landmark, the Gunter Hotel was built in 1909. In 1965, a young man using an alias checked in alone to room 636 but began spending time with an unidentified blonde woman. A few days later, a maid entered the room to find the man standing next to the bed covered in blood. He grabbed a bundle of sheets and ran out. Police came and found the woman’s blood everywhere and parts of her flesh in the toilet. The man was located at a nearby hospital, but he shot himself as police approached. The woman’s body was never found. People have since reported strange happenings in room 636, including sightings of the spirit and the woman’s sudden appearance in photographs in the room.

6. Bullock Hotel (Deadwood, South Dakota)
Sheriff and hotelier Seth Bullock is best known to modern audiences as one of the main characters on HBO’s “Deadwood,” but the man was real. Present-day visitors to the Bullock Hotel in South Dakota have reportedly seen Bullock himself walking through the building or heard a male voice call their names when no one else is present.

7. Crescent Hotel (Eureka Springs, Arkansas)
Opened in 1886, the Crescent Hotel looks a little creepy from the outside, with its old-style architecture. Originally built to capitalize on the popularity of Eureka Springs’ reputed “healing waters,” the hotel has had ups and downs over its long life, as well as quite a few brushes with the supernatural. One spirit, whom the staff have named Michael, is reportedly the ghost of one of the stone masons who built the hotel and who died in a fall on the second floor. As a result, room 218 is said to be the most haunted of all of them, and Michael reportedly loves to turn appliances off and on and pound on the walls.

8. Imperial Hotel (Cripple Creek, Colorado)
The Imperial Hotel opened at the turn of last century in part to house the miners and visitors who needed a place to stay after the 1896 fire wrecked most of the town. It’s rumored that George Long, the hotel’s former owner, haunts the building to this day and can be seen playing the slot machines and flirting with women. Night guards have reported hearing sounds from the casino floor at but found no one there.

9. Ghost City Inn (Jerome, Arizona)
Jerome is a tiny tourist town in the Arizona desert, and the Ghost City Inn is rumored to be the home of multiple spirits who haunt the building and its inhabitants. A female and male spirit have been spotted lurking in different rooms, and some guests have reported having their doors slam shut on their own.

10. Lumber Baron Inn (Denver, Colorado)
This elegant bead & breakfast was once the mansion home of lumber baron John Mouat. The inn was restored and reopened in the early 1990s, at which point people began to hear strange sounds like phantom footsteps. Some paranormal investigators claim to have made contact with the spirits of two women who were killed at the hotel in 1970: One girl was 17 who was raped and killed, and the other was her 18-year-old friend who came across the scene and was killed by the murderer. The case is still unsolved.

11. Skirvin Hotel (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma)
Constructed with oil money earned by W.B. Skirvin, this Oklahoma landmark was a popular speakeasy during Prohibition. Rumor has it that Skirvin had an affair with a maid who became pregnant and was subsequently confined to a room on the top floor to prevent the scandal from leaking out. After the baby was born, the woman became so depressed at her imprisonment that she took the child and jumped out the window. For decades, random guests reported an inability to sleep over the cries of a child coming from somewhere nearby. The hotel was closed in 1988 but recently reopened, and the maid’s spirit is alleged to still haunt its halls.

12. Tutwiler Hotel (Birmingham, Alabama)
The ghost of the titular Colonel Tutwiler is rumored to haunt this Southern hotel. After a string of occurences in which the bartender came to work to find the kitchen appliances running despite having been turned off the night before, the staff began to half-jokingly admonish the ghost of Tutwiler for messing up the kitchen and ask him to not do it again. Weirdly enough, that fixed things, though some people still say you can see the ghost of Tutwiler around the hotel.

13. Plains Hotel (Cheyenne, Wyoming)
Cheyenne’s Plains Hotel opened in 1911 with much fanfare and soon became known for catering to wealthy visitors in the oil and cattle industries. But a sinister event led to what many believe to be the hotel’s haunting. A bride and groom checked into the Plains Hotel on their honeymoon, and one evening the husband met a prostitute in the hotel bar and went back to her room, his wife watching the whole time. The wife took her husband’s gun and followed the couple to their room where she killed them both and then shot herself in the honeymoon suite. All three spirits are said to still linger in the hotel, and staff claim to have heard weeping and crying coming from the couple’s former room even when it’s empty.

14. The Inn at Merridun (Union, South Carolina)
The innkeepers at Merridun cheekily play along with their hotel’s ghostly past. Rumor goes that ten different ghosts or “energy forces” linger at the inn, leading to unusual happenings, freaky sightings, and minor issues like missing or moved possessions.

15. Ballastone Inn (Savannah, Georgia)
Before it was an inn, the Ballastone was the home of General Robert Anderson and his wife, Sarah. Robert fought in the Civil War, and the family lived there into the 1880s. People say you can still see Sarah’s ghost walking along the second floor, or using the elevator.

16. Sheridan Inn (Sheridan, Wyoming)
At one time operated by Buffalo Bill Cody, this inn near the northern border of Wyoming is now the home of Miss Kate, the ghost of a woman who worked at the hotel for 64 years in a variety of positions, including desk clerk and hostess. When Miss Kate died in 1968, her ashes were interred in the wall of her third-floor room, which is prone now to chills and erratic light behavior.

17. Buxton Inn (Granville, Ohio)
One of the most ghost-filled places in the state, Ohio’s Buxton Inn is known for its many hauntings. Reports of spirit sightings date back to the 1920s, when people saw what looked like Orrin Granger, the man who built the inn early in the 1800s. There’s also Bonnie, a former innkeeper who died in room 9 and reportedly haunts it to this day. Guests in the room claim to have seen a woman dressed in blue, which was Bonnie’s favorite color.

18. Laguna Vista (Eagle Nest, New Mexico)
This one’s another honeymoon of heartbreak. There are many spirits said to be stuck haunting the Laguna Vista, including a young bride whose husband went out on a hunting trip and never returned, forcing her to work as a saloon girl to suppoert herself. Some people say they’ve seen her spirit hanging around the building, looking for husband. Other ghostly occurences include a piano that plays when no one is around.

19. Glick Mansion Bed & Breakfast (Atchison, Kansas)
Billed as the most haunted town in Kansas, Atchison has its share of attractions rumored to be populated by spirits from beyond the grave. The Glick Mansion, home of one-time Kansas governor George Washington Glick (in office from 1883-1885), is a tourist destination that’s also on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s also the supposed home to a benevolent ghost that’s prone to open and close doors at random.

20. Lemp Mansion (St. Louis, Missouri)
The Lemp Mansion has seen several incarnations before its current status as a hotel. The Lemp family was a major name in breweries in St. Louis before Prohibition, but their family empire fell to ruin, divorce, and death by suicide. The building is considered one of the most haunted in the country, and the various members of the Lemp clan have been seen roaming the halls. People have also said they’ve seen candles light themselves, doors open on their own, and glasses flying off shelves to crash on the floor.

Lake Kenyir

Tasik Kenyir or Kenyir Lake is an artificial lake located in the state of Terengganu in northeast Malaysia created in 1985 by the damming of the Kenyir River to create the Sultan Mahmud Power Station.

Kenyir Lake is the largest man-made lake in Southeast Asia. Sharing its border with Kelantan in the west and Pahang in the south. This immense lake also serve as another gateway to Taman Negara.

Kenyir Lake is also home to numerous species of freshwater fishes and exotic wildlife. With a water catchment area of 38,000 hectares, the lake is naturally a haven for freshwater fish. A recent study revealed that there are some 300 species of freshwater fish dwelling in the lake. The presence of dead trees around the lake serves as a perfect breeding ground for these fishes. Algae growing on dead trees and branches serve as the main form of sustenance for the fishes. From studies and observations conducted by the Department of Fisheries, species such as the big Lampam Sungai (Barboides), Kelah (Malaysian Mahsee), Toman (Snakehead), Kawan (Friendly Barb), Kalui (Giant Gouramy) and Kelisa (Green Arowana) are found in waters and around dead trees.

The jungles of Kenyir are home to some endangered species, such as Asian Elephants and Malaysian tigers.

Demand For Male Social Escorts Raising In Malaysia

Picture is for illustration only

Apparently there has been a rise in the number of male escorts over the past two years in Malaysia. Read this story:

After obtaining a diploma from Bali, Gary (not his real name), 36, started work as a masseur in Kuala Lumpur. He became very popular with many of his clients, especially female patrons.

His good looks and body were a big part of the allure.

"I used to love my job as a masseur, it was fulfilling and I got to meet a lot of people. But it didn't take me long to learn that many women were not just interested in a massage, they were looking for the 'plus, plus'.

"At first it came as a shock to me, but eventually I realised that I could make a lot of money."

That was three years ago. Today, Gary owns one of the biggest escort services in town.

"I have over 60 escorts, both male and female, who work for me. When I first started the company, business was not so great. Today, I can hardly keep up with requests. For whatever reason, more and more people are looking for male escorts. I believe it could be because of Internet porn sites.

"Each of my staff gets no less than 15 calls per month. Not a day goes by without a call from a client. Many times I have to turn them down because I don't have the manpower.

"It used to be simple requests -- men wanting female escorts. But that has all changed. These days, people are getting more adventurous and imaginative.

"Currently, the trend involves couples who want escorts, for whatever reason.

"We also get a lot of business from tourists who find us through our website or have heard about us from friends."

The assumption that female clients are usually "aunties", Gary says, is far from the truth.

"You'd be surprised to know that most of our female customers are between the ages of 20 and 40. Many are very beautiful women. I'm not sure why they need an escort when they can get picked up anywhere."

For the escorts, earning a monthly five-figure salary and receiving expensive watches, he says, is the biggest attraction.

"The first thing that comes to my mind when I receive a call is, 'How much?'. It is all about the money."

Gary says the male escort industry in Malaysia is picking up fast, making room for a lot of bogus independent escorts.

"There are many men claiming they can do this and that, but many are fakes. They are just looking for free sex. When clueless women hire these escorts, they are putting themselves in danger.

"A lot of these so-called escorts advertise their services on the Internet but they have no massage skills or personality. They are spoiling the market."

With the increasing demand, Gary says, he is hoping to recruit more escorts.

"My phone has to be on all the time. I take the last call at 3am. Many women contact us the moment their husbands leave. 'Hotel ABC, Room 308, Ms. X', those are the messages that pop-up on my phone throughout the day."

But not all male escorts are doing well. Some of the "small fish" are struggling to stay alive.

David (not his real name), 21, is one of them.

"I'm a foreign student in a Malaysian university, trying to find the money to complete my studies. While surfing the Internet, I discovered that I could earn quite a bit of money being a social escort. I decided to give it a try.

"I offered my services on every expatriate website I could find. I wasn't sure what to advertise at first, but there were many examples to follow. It was as if I was trying to sell a product.

"It's only been four months since my first post and I've already had three clients. All of them were housewives in their 30s.

"I don't specify an amount, but the usual fee is RM300 for two hours. The money is just enough for taxi fare and groceries.

"On a good day, you'll get a client who wants you to spend the night and follow her to dinner, that would cost around RM1,500. But, that rarely happens.

"Business has been slow and I'm looking for that 'one' lady who will be able to support me. I don't mind being exclusive to her, as long as she can pay for some of my expenses until I complete my studies. It's difficult because many women don't want that commitment.

"I can't afford to have a girlfriend right now as I'm sure she won't allow me to be an escort."

David says his family would be devastated if they knew what he did.

Brian (not his real name), 24, is in the same boat.

"I'm a part-time gigolo. The response has been slow, as the competition is getting tougher. We have to be unique to get noticed.

"So far, my clients have been couples who are looking to spice up their marriages. Many clients invite me into their home and we talk a little before they lead me to the bedroom."

He says there has to be some level of trust, if one wants to be in the escort industry.

"It's not 100 per cent safe, as many things could go wrong. As much as the client is wary about me, I'm also worried about what might happen in their home. They could be the police or thieves.

"But if I worry about everything that could go wrong, I wouldn't be able to be an escort. I don't tell my clients how much I want. Whatever they give, it is a 'gift'. They normally pay around RM350 for a session."

And, the issue of safety?

"I go for a medical check-up every two months to protect myself. But if a client has a sexually transmitted disease, how would I know?

"That's the main reason I don't plan on being an escort forever. Eventually, I want to get my hotel management degree and settle down," he says.

GigoloJobs.com operator, Daniel Richter, has been a gigolo for more than six years and manages a popular international male escort service website.

"I started when I was at university, just for fun and money. Now, it has been for more than six years and I'm still loving it.

"Money is important and ultimately you need to get paid for your services, otherwise it turns into a relationship and this is something we don't want.

"But the main point is having fun. Where else can you get money for making women happy?" he says.

And, who are these happy women?

"It depends. Usually nice women who are quite busy. Sometimes you are hired by two or three teenage girls who just want to have a private party. But most of the time, it's middle-aged women who just want someone to listen to them."

Richter also enjoys being a gigolo because of the challenges involved, which he finds stimulating.

"My full-time job is being a tax adviser. Being a gigolo is rather a kind of a 'sport discipline'. To be attractive and to attract the woman client is challenging because they do not want to hire just a 'body'. They are looking for an attractive and interesting man, which you need to prove you are.

"I don't see any problem with that, as long as it's done on a part-time basis. You get a fixed salary from your day-job and make some good money from having fun. That is the point of all this."

There is also an article 2 years ago about Malaysian women paying for sexual services. And last year we learn about Toy boy clubs or Tai Tai clubs mushrooming in Singapore where older women purchase the services of younger men.

School Boys Recruited Into Gangs

Picture is for illustration only

According to a recent news report, a 17 year old Chinese student from Johor said that there was no special initiation ceremony to become a gang member. He only had to give his name on a piece of paper and was accepted into the gang. This appears to be a deviation from the traditional way of being initiated into a gang.

In Malaysia the triad tradition is rather unglamourous in comparison to those having roots from Hong Kong. The element of ceremony and tradition is virtually non-existent, and these gangs are run strictly as businesses.

According to historians, Chinese gangs (called triads in the West) have their roots in a 17th Century movement dedicated to restoring China's Ming dynasty to the throne, but over time they degenerated into criminal gangs.

A well-connected member of the Malaysian Chinese community based in New Zealand told the BBC that in some places, Chinese gangs still have rituals.

For instance, if a triad leader intends to retire from the secret society, he gathers everybody from his gang and in front of leaders from other societies he washes his hands in a gold basin which symbolises that from that day onwards he is not going to be involved in the triad society any more.

A Malaysia triad member, Ah Hing, however told the BBC that being a gang in Malaysia it's a pragmatic affair, where deals are reached with the authorities - who set boundaries for crimes they know can never be eliminated.

"If I want to operate on a particular street and ask a politician to ask the authorities not to disturb me, the politician might say: 'It's impossible to have zero arrests, so you can operate on certain hours and we will patrol after those hours' - so it's a win-win situation," Ah Hing said.

"If someone betrays me personally... I will get a few gang members together and beat him up until he's paralysed or he's a vegetable, but if the matter is really big then they'll be brought before my tai ko for a trial," Ah Hing continued.

"If my tai ko asks us to deal with someone, even if we kill that person, we won't be worried, because if the police arrest us, my Tai Ko will get me out," he added.

"Last time I was taken in the front door of the [police] lock-up, and right away I walk out of the back door."

While most middle class Malaysians have little or nothing to do with the triads, many poorer Malaysians turn to the triads when they need to borrow money and sometimes even to find jobs for a living.

If they need money, they resort to borrowing money from Ah Longs (Loan Sharks). Further, according to the news report, during the economic downturn in 1998, many Malaysians turned to the triads for work. It allowed thousand to earn a living.

Singaporean Online Casanova Cheats Malaysian Women

This is the latest story about cyber cassanovas preying on women:

He is neither good looking nor young, but this sweet-talking Casanova has managed to cheat at least seven women of nearly RM400,000.

The 41-year-old Singaporean, known as Dennis Lim, has a habit of preying on women through the social networking website, ahmoi.com.

That’s him!: Chong and Qi Qi checking out a picture of Lim at the department chief’s office in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
One of his victims, Qi Qi, lost RM294,662 within the seven months of their “friendship.”

“I was not really attracted to him. He was really aggressive and he made the first move online,” said the 34-year-old businesswoman from Penang, who sought the help of MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Michael Chong at his office yesterday.

She said Lim claimed to be a factory manager and knew how to take advantage of her weakness.

“He used sob stories to get my sympathy.

“For instance, he claimed his stepmother was admitted into ICU; that his ex-boss had delayed his business reimbursements and that he had met with a road accident before Chinese New Year.

“I felt sorry for him and wanted to help,” she said, adding that she allowed Lim to use her credit cards when he visited her in Penang in October last year.

Qi Qi started getting suspicious in March and lodged two police reports in Penang and another two in Singapore.

She later traced Lim’s caller history from a sub-line she started for him, and found six other women in Malaysia whom Lim had cheated for money and sex.

“His modus operandi is to get acquainted with lonely, single women online and then slowly work his way into their pockets with his sob stories,” Qi Qi said, adding that the victims had refused to make police reports against Lim.

Chong urged the other victims to come forward so that he could assist them.

“I will take this case to the Malaysian Interpol and relevant authorities,” he said.
He also reminded women to be wary of meeting strangers online.

This oracle uses two two plastic boxes lowered into Paul's tank, one with the German flag and the other with the opponent's flag. Each has a tasty morsel of food inside. The box which Paul opens first is judged to be the predicted winner of the game.

Paul's latest prediction is Spain winning over Germany tomorrow.

The Negritos Of Peninsular Malaysia

An Orang Asli village
By Sharon Ng Kooi Kin

Their frizzy hair, tight black curls and dark skin give them away immediately as Negritos.

I am in an Orang Asli settlement in Ulu Kelantan and am overjoyed when it is confirmed that the Orang Batek jungle dwellers are descendents of the Negrito (Semai) race.

The reason I am so excited is because I have only read about the Negritos in books and never seen any of them.

There are three main jungle tribes in the rain forests of Peninsular Malaysia: Negritos in the north, Senois in the central region and Proto-Malays in the south.

Primitive Settlement

It’s been raining in Taman Negara Kelantan in Kuala Koh, so outdoor activities such as trekking are out. On a whim, we decide to visit the Orang Asli settlement about one kilometre from the park entrance.

I have been to many Orang Asli villages in Cameron Highlands, Pahang, Endau Rompin, Pahang/Johor and Ulu Geroh, Perak. But what strikes me most about this settlement is its utter primitiveness compared with the ones I’ve seen.

The huts are made of mainly bamboo, bound together with rattan twines and thatched with attap.

Elevated about half a metre from the ground, the floor is made of bamboo trunks overlaid with split bamboo. The walls are also of split bamboo and there are no doors. Some huts don’t even have walls. Cement and concrete are not used and there is no electricity supply.

The central courtyard is bare earth, with puddles of water and muddy patches. We tread gingerly as we visit one hut after another.

Recently, the state government has installed a piped water system leading from a mountain stream to a central water tank. Families collect water here for their own household needs.

The huts are bare, with no furniture. The single-room abode for a family functions as kitchen, bedroom and living room.

Cooking is done over a crude three-legged metal ring, using wood from the forest. Each family has a stove placed on a zinc sheet to prevent the bamboo floor from burning. One big pot and a kettle are the only kitchen utensils. There are no appliances or cutlery except for a hacking knife and plastic containers, plates and cups.

Mats and sarongs are spread on the floor for sleeping. There are no pillows or blankets though I see mosquito nets in some rooms.

Both the young and old men wear T-shirts and short pants and everyone wears Japanese slippers.

Each family receives an annual government subsidy of RM100 though staples such as rice, sugar and cooking oil are delivered regularly. A van comes two or three times a week with vegetables and sundry goods. Gathering from the jungle and hunting supplement is the community’s meager diet.

Negrito Orang Asli

A simple division of labour exists in the Batek society. The women catch fish and pick jungle fruit while the men hunt for meat and collect bamboo. The nearest market is too far away without transport.

Vanishing Jungle Tribe

The Negritos form only three per cent of the Orang Asli population in the peninsula. A census in 2000 recorded only 1,519 Batek people who are considered the earliest inhabitants of the peninsula. They are of Austro-Malenesian/Asiatic origin from the Hoabinhian period. This has been determined by archaeological discoveries of burial grounds and cave drawings indicating that the Negritos’ history date back 10,000 years!

They speak a version of the Jahai language though many of the Bateks (sometimes spelt Bateq) are quite fluent in Bahasa Malaysia. None of the children here attends school though efforts are being made to enrol them in the nearest school, 30km away in Kampung Aring Satu.

The Bateks were a nomadic race but since resettlement by organisations such as Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Majlis Agama Islam, they can be classified as semi-nomadic.

Other Orang Asli settlements near urban areas, for example Gombak, outside Kuala Lumpur, can be considered permanent villages. But many are still semi-permanent settlements established on the fringe of jungle so that they can continue with their traditional way of living.

The Tengku Mahkota of Kelantan paid a visit to this Ulu Kelantan Orang Batek settlement in 2001, resulting in increased attention and aid.

The Batek Negritos may be a vanishing race as their livelihood and way of living are threatened by deforestation, construction of dams and encroaching plantations.

Though there are no signs of starvation among the Kuala Koh Orang Asli children, some have unhealthy scaly skin on their arms and legs.

I find out later that the average school dropout rate for Orang Asli children, after Year Five is as high as 70 per cent.

Forest resources, on which the Orang Asli are so dependent, is depleting fast. To further threaten their livelihood are modern hunters armed with modern techniques for fishing and hunting. They use guns, nets, poison and explosives. How can the Orang Asli, with their blowpipes, compete?

As jungle resources dwindle, a Batek settlement may be forced to move to a new location, usually deeper into the jungle.

Be a responsible visitor

Respect the sensitivities of the Orang Asli and their aversion to visitors and photographers. The kids, ever curious, do accept gifts of money and small items of food but bigger parcels should be handed over to Hamdan, the Tok Batin (headman), for distribution. Secondhand or new clothes such as T-shirts and sarongs are welcome.

During my visit, I notice they have canned food and soda, a soft toy, a sepak takraw ball and two toy trucks, obviously gifts from visitors.

Tour guide Zulkifli Mansor from Gua Musang says there are 100 villagers in 25 families here. He has been bringing visitors here for eight years. He prefers to bring small groups though sometimes there are groups of up to 40 schoolchildren. These young visitors would bring sweets and biscuits as presents.

Zulkifli organises three-day, two-night visits with interesting activities, accommodation and meals in nearby Taman Negara Kelantan.

It may have been a brief visit but it has left me with haunting images of extreme poverty that are in sharp contrast to the rest of the country. It is no wonder that the Batek Negritos, together with other jungle and hill tribes of Southeast Asia, are classified as Fourth World.

Burning issues such as land rights, social assimilation, education, medical care and depletion of traditional living resources need to be addressed.

How To Get There

Exit the North-South PLUS highway at Simpang Pulai and head towards Cameron Highlands and on to Gua Musang.

From there, take the road to Kuala Krai. You will pass a Shell petrol station near the 45km.

One kilometre after that, turn right and take a winding road that leads to the Aring Felda scheme and Taman Negara Kelantan, Kuala Koh, about 40km from the junction. The Orang Batek settlement is about 1km before the park entrance.

Starbucks Coffee From The Tap ?

I heard that some households in Malaysia are getting free Starbucks coffee straight from their water taps. But if you want a latte, you have to add your own milk, lah.

The picture above is taken from a kitchen water tap in Taman Indah, Batu Belah, Klang.

The Horseshoe Crab, A Malaysian Delicacy

Although it is not commonly eaten, some Malaysians do eat Horseshoe Crabs and consider it a delicacy. The Horseshoe Crab known as Belangkas in Malay or colloquially called "King Crab" in Malaysia because of its blue blood. Its blood, know to have clinical value, cost RM17,500 (USD5,000) a liter in the US. 1 liter of its blue blood is contained in approximately 115 Horseshoe Crabs.
This exotic dish, usually cooked asam pedas or sambal tumis style, is only available in selective Malay restaurants especially in Johor. The best part is its eggs.

One restaurant that specialises in cooking the belangkas is Belankas Mahkota in Kota Tinggi, Johor. The NST reports this:

It is a family business run by Abdul Hamid Musa, his wife Mariam Arif and their three sons.

Hamid of Tanjung Buai, a fishing village in the Sungai Johor estuary, says his customers include locals as well as folk from Kuala Lumpur and Perak.

"The Tunku Mahkota of Johor gave the restaurant its name after eating here in 2005," he said proudly.
Hamid used to serve the dish to his guests at home. And they enjoyed it so much that they told him he should sell the belangkas

So he set up a stall in Jalan Tun Sri Lanang in 2001. From that, it grew into a full-scale restaurant that seats 100. It is open from 10.30am to 2.30pm on weekdays. On weekends, it is closed for Hamid and his family to cater the food for weddings or other events.

Hamid buys his crabs at RM5 each from a local supplier who also exports to Thailand. The supplier gets his stock from the fishermen who catch them off the coast.

"Because I have known the supplier for many years, I always get stock. But still I limit the servings to 25 a day to make sure I have enough for the next day.

"We also serve mussel, clam, snail, fish and chicken dishes, but my customers are not happy if I have to tell them we have run out of belangkas," he says.

A dish of crabs costs around RM10, depending on its size.

The crab must be prepared carefully. If it is not properly cleaned, especially of the faeces, it can cause dizziness when eaten.

Customer Mohd Salleh Abdul Rahman said he likes the dish because he has read that the horseshoe crab has curative properties.

"It's not only delicious, but good for the health, " says Salleh.

Sab ariah Salim, of Kampung Sungai Melayu, Johor Baru, said: "A delicious belangkas meal is rare nowadays. That's why I often come here for lunch with my colleagues. I also like the kampung chicken curry," she said.
