The Forgotten Rattanware

BATU PAHAT, Johor: Have you heard about a "mother-child chair" or a"rattan rocking horse"?

They might be unfamiliar terms for young people today, but are actually laden with unlimited childhood memories for people who are now in their middle age.

During the 60’s and 70’s, rattan products were seen as major household necessities. Mother-and-child chairs, rattan rocking horses, rattan chairs, rattan cradles and so on were essential items for all the mothers who had toddlers at home.

That said, it seems that rattan products have slowly faded into oblivion due do the increased popularity of plastic products.

Xie Li Rattan Shop in Batu Pahat is the only remaining rattan shop in town still selling rattan products. Its 52-year-old owner, Zheng Yi-chang took over the business from his father in 1977.

Zheng said during an interview with Sin Chew Daily that since his father came from Shantou, China to Malaysia in the 1950’s, he had set up his own rattan shop along Jalan Engan.

He and four of his brothers had been very much influenced by his father, and three of them have since dedicated themselves to this industry.

Two his brothers are now retired, leaving him alone to go on with this trade.

The heyday of rattanware

Zheng said that the 1960’s and 70’s were the heyday of rattanware and there were a total of seven rattan shops in his neighbourhood at that time.

Unfortunately the public, especially the Chinese, have later switched to plastic products which boast modern designs and cheaper prices.

He also said rattan making industry was facing steady decline due to the short supply of rattan. The price of rattan has doubled over the past ten years, and this results in his rattan products becoming costlier today.

Zheng said most local rattan had been supplied by the Orang Asli villages in Pahang but as more and more of them chose to walk out of the jungle and worked in factories or plantations, the supply of rattan dwindled.

More expensive but lasting

Zheng said although rattan products were more expensive, they were more durable compared to the plastic ones.

He said a normal rattan chair would cost about RM20 while a large rattan rocking chair would cost around RM200. In general, the time needed to make a rattan product would depend very much on the complexity of each work, and it takes just about half an hour to complete a simple rattan basket.

Apart from that, Zheng is also providing rattan repair services for his customers including those coming from other places, as it is hard to get someone who really has the skills to fix a broken rattan product in many places nowadays.

He lamented that none of his four daughters was keen to inherit his business.

Scratch-And-Win Scams

This pic is for illustration only

A news report said that syndicates operating scratch-and-win contests in Malaysia are reaping an annual profit of RM2 billion.

Scratch-and-win syndicates have been operating in Malaysia for the last 15 years.

Despite numerous media reports, many Malaysians continue to fall prey to this scam. The victims are not only naive university students, housewives and civil servants, but also businessmen and professionals.

The syndicates, who have hundreds of agents and companies operating using direct selling licences, are making thousands of Ringgit a day through the scam.

Many have fallen victim to scratch-and-win syndicates as they were swayed by promises of free cars, holidays trips and other items.

Salesmen for this scam were located in shopping complexes, bus terminals, LRT stations, hypermarkets and outside banks to make contact with potential victims.

Potential victims who "won prizes" would be told to go to the salesman's office to redeem their prizes. At the office, the victims would then be persuaded  into believing that they could win big prizes such as Honda Civics, Proton Wiras, 42-inch Plasma TVs, LCD TVs, motorcycles, refrigerators, video cameras and handphones by spending "a little money" to redeem these prizes.

Once the victims were convinced of their chances to win these lucrative prizes, they were then asked to fill up a form agreeing to pay additional sums of money to actually purchase some inferior goods at inflated prices.

According to rumours, the scratch-and-win syndicates in Malaysia are controlled by 4 different "organisations" operating from a northern state in Peninsular Malaysia. These taikors are apparently filthy rich and are well known in the Chinese community for their charitable contributions to schools, temples and civic organisations.

Malaysian Men Buying Lingerie Online

The pic is for illustration only

The above picture shows a man trying on a bra he bought online. According to a report in the Star, more Malaysian men are purchasing exotic and sexy ladies undergarments online.

Apparently men prefer to purchase such items online because they are embarrassed to buy such clothing for their wives or girlfriends in normal shops.

The report says that some of the purchasers are even from places like Felda settlements, because they have no easy access to regular shops selling such clothing.

An online lingerie shop owner says another reason people buy online is because of the variety of merchandise - there are many designs to choose from, such as satin slips, corsets, two-piece sets and even those that come with whips. Some of these designs are not readily available in Malaysian shops, especially the more exotic ones.

Lingerie corsets are apparently one of the hottest-selling lingerie and customers are demanding for more corset designs, such as those with lace and leather.

Foreign Workers in Petaling Street

Kuala Lumpur's Petaling Street (Chinatown), a tourist attraction well known for its local Chinese hawker fare and infamous for selling pirated clothes and accessories including bootleg DVDs and CDs, has in recent years seen an influx of foreign workers tending the stalls and shops in place of locals.

A local tabloid reported that the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) together with various other enforcement agencies like the police and immigration department detained 38 foreigners working illegally among the 773 petty traders in Petaling Street, on Monday.

I'm sure there are more than 38 foreigners working illegally in Petaling Street as one can hardly see locals working at the stalls and shops these days. As prior warning was given last month to the petty traders about employing illegal workers, I suppose most foreigners without work permits have temporarily gone into hiding to evade being arrested.

One can't blame the local traders for employing foreigners instead of locals. Apart from the relatively cheap labour, these people work harder and are more enterprising. What's amazing about these foreigners, many of whom are Bangladeshis and Burmese, is that they can speak reasonably fluent Malay and Cantonese. Most have picked up the local languages within a few months in this country. Shame of us Malaysians who still can't speak these languages well despite having lived in this country for so long.

No More Pirated Software

According to a news report by the NST, a reduction in software piracy to 50 per cent in three years could mean thousands of new jobs, millions in tax revenues and economic growth.

The study by International Data Corporation (IDC) said that Malaysia could look forward to about new 2,600 jobs, approximtatly US$660 million (RM2.1 billion) in economic growth and US$144 million more in tax revenues when its software piracy was reduced by half in 2011.

IDC is also of the opnion that reducing software piracy had a "multiplier effect" - for every US$1 spent on licensed software, an additional US$1.25 was spent on related services from local vendors like installing the software and maintenance services.

To reduce software piracy, the Business Software Alliance encouraged governments to update national copyright laws and implement the World Intellectual Property obligation.
------------------

Software and hardware retailers in Low Yat Plaza in KL and Digital Mall in PJ do not sell or install unlicensed sofware any longer. As orginal sofware is much too expensive for the average Malaysian, should the IDC give Malaysia, as a developing nation, a few more years leeway pertaining to software piracy, say until 2020 ? What do you think guys ?

Well, Fook Yew, too !

This other shop in KL says Fook On (Fuck On, not Fuck Off).

As far as I'm concerned, "Fook On" is better than "Fook Off"
