Divorce Club Striving To Save Marriages

PENANG: Divorces have become an increasingly common phenomenon in Malaysia nowadays.

In view of the increasing divorce rate, which may have a negative bearing on the family values and social harmony in the country leading to potentially lower marriage rate, a group of divorced men and women have decided to set up a Divorce Club aimed at providing counselling services and assistance to divorced people, while through their own experiences offering advice to couples encountering marital problems with the hope they do not relinquish their marriages easily.

According to statistics, Taiwan has the highest divorce rate in Asia, while the low marriage rate and high divorce rate in Malaysia have aroused concerns from the society.

Co-founder of the Divorce Club, Yang Fu Long, 47, told Guang Ming Daily that during a gathering with friends that included men and women, they found that more and more people were having marital problems while some of the people were suffering from depression because they were unable to take the consequences of divorces.

Someone to talk to

As a result, they proposed to set up the Divorce Club, with the hope they could provide a channel for people to talk and support those who might encounter marital problems or frustrations in their marital relationships by sharing their own experience divorce experiences.

After the idea was mooted, Yang said more than twenty people had responded positively .The founders hope with their own experiences in divorces, they could offer some useful counselling services to people having problems with their marriages.

"All of us have experienced this kind of thing; we understand that when people are facing potential divorces, they need someone to listen to them and that is where the Divorce Club will come in."

Hotline service

Yang said currently the club had more than twenty male and female members, aged between 30 and 50, some having been divorced for more than 20 years while some have just been divorced for merely a year.

He said, the Divorce Club plans to set up hotline services as well in order to advise people facing divorce and provide legal consultation services.

The establishment of the club is not meant to encourage people to divorce or advocate the divorce culture in the society. On the contrary, it voices concerns over the increasingly serious phenomena of late marriages and high divorce rates in the country.

A place to share

With regard to the establishment of the Divorce Club, Wang Yu Xian, a counsellor at the Women’s Aid Organisation, feels that if the purpose of establishing the club is to provide a space for mutual encouragement for divorced people, then the country will have one more aid group with a supportive nature, and this will have a positive influence on our society especially at a time when people’s hearts are getting more and more fragile.

She said the sharing space indeed plays a crucial role when people are encountering setbacks due to marital failures, as they need someone to talk to. This could help them overcome the frustration.

"In many cases, due to lack of this kind of outlet in our community or lack of care from the family, the divorced people’s may often be forced into a dead end. As a matter of fact, so long as there is a proper channel for them to vent their depressed emotions they would soon be back to their normal lives."

However, Wang reminds the Divorce Club that if they want to provide hotline services to the public, the counsellors must be professionally trained, for if an organisation lacks this kind of professionalism, the counsellors may themselves be dragged into the quagmire of their own emotions while listening to the grievances of the complainants.

According to her, although all the club's members have personally experienced similar destinies themselves, as professional counsellors, they should have already got over their own traumatic experiences and be self reminded to handle their emotions in a professional manner, otherwise they might influence the people who are supposed to share their sorrows with them.

Toilet Bowl Restaurant

Recently, a weird restaurant by the name of the "Toilet Bowl Restaurant" has successfully caused a stir among the youngsters in Melaka. The restaurant is using real toilet bowls for its seats, and large basins as dining tables.

The person-in-charge of the restaurant, Cai Bao-er told Sin Chew Daily this was the first fun restaurant in Melaka and one of the restaurant chain's four branches nationwide.

The first T-Bowl Restaurant was set up in Penang in February 2008, followed by the another two in Sungai Wang Plaza and Sunway Pyramid.

Mistaken for a shop selling toilet bowls

Cai disclosed that the owner of the restaurant, Chen Shi-en was a young man in his 20s when he opened his first restaurant. At that time, he just wanted to set up something queer and suddenly a scene in a movie flashed past his mind of actor Anthony Wong enjoying his noodle sitting on a toilet bowl.

"Chen likes bathroom activities including soaking himself in the bathtub," said Cai.

According to Chen, using the bathroom and toilet is a daily activity of all people and this has prompted him to adopt the theme of toilet for his restaurant.

The toilets bowls used in the restaurant as seats are indeed real toilet bowls! These toilet bowls are extremely gorgeous while the basins are lovely decorated, thus successfully eliminating the foul impressions among the people. There is also a huge water pipe used as a decoration on the wall of the restaurant.

Cai said the restaurant had always been mistaken for a store selling toilet bowls.

Youngsters the main customers
she said the restaurant had managed to lure many courageous young customers to dine there when it first opened its doors in Melaka on Feb 21. And since the opening day, the restaurant has been doing very brisk business ever.

Many customers have also brought along their cameras to snap the funny decorations inside the restaurant.
Most of the restaurant's patrons are young people, and some parents would also bring along their children to enjoy the food there.

Fila Brasileiro, World’s Most Aggressive Dog Breed

SITIAWAN, Perak: Fila Brasileiro is a large working breed of dog developed in Brazil and recognised as one of the most aggressive dog breeds in the world.

Fila Brasileiro is an excellent guard for estates, prisons, factories and cattle farms. During the olden days, it also acted as a bulldog due to its potential aggression and outstanding courage.

Fila Brasileiros are rarely seen in Malaysia, but the breed is renowned for its faithfulness and loyalty. In fact, it is the nature of this dog to be loyal and protective to its owner and is extremely tolerant with children in the family.

Massive build

According to Wong who owns three Fila Brasileiros, the dogs are docile, obedient, loyal and loving companions to the owner. However, they can also get protective and anti-social to strangers and will attack without hesitation.

Wong added that not many people were familiar with this breed of dog and therefore not many people kept the dog in Malaysia.

Wong is the first person to have adopted Fila Brasileiro in Perak. A Fila Brasileiro can fetch more than RM3,000 because there are very few of the dogs available in this country while the demand for them is big.

Rapid growth

Lee, who also owns two Fila Brasileiro puppies, told Sin Chew Daily the dogs were very obedient and would not run around even if they were unleashed.

The Fila is not an average breed of dogs with unforgiving impetuous temperament and it requires a confident, experienced and savvy owner to be aware of the dog's innate tendencies.

The Fila Brasileiro is an excellent estate guardian. It does not hide its dislike towards strangers, but these dogs are not disqualified from the show ring for showing aggression to the judges. Such aversion is instinctive in Filas, so much so that the Brazilian breed standard advises judges not to touch the dog. However, the FCI standard allows for disqualification of excessively aggressive dogs, mainly when the owner doesn't have enough control to show them in public areas. The breed is renowned for their faithfulness to family and friends, but this is not a breed for everyone.

The Fila needs a confident, experienced, savvy owner who is aware of the breed's innate tendencies. Filas are not well suited to busy household which entertain many guests, as they do not interact well with strangers. The Fila is a natural guardian breed.

Filas bond strongly with their immediate families and show extreme loyalty and protectiveness towards them. They live to protect their loved ones, including children and other pets. Very few will accept strangers. Many Filas will never tolerate any stranger. Perhaps because of their aversion towards strangers, they are excellent family dogs, devoted to the children in their family.

In the New York City, United Kingdom, Israel, Denmark, Norway, Malta and Cyprus it is illegal to own any of these dogs without specific exemption from a court.
